CLUNCH MAGAZINE 5The Burwell SwishOn March 23rd there was the Frst of a series of Swish (clothes swap/rehoming) events in Burwell. It was held at Mandeville Hall alongside a pop up caf and eco stalls.A whopping 196kg of good quality clothes and accessories was donated and approximately one third of this was rehomed on the day. There was everything from jumpers to jeans to dresses and evening wear, along with footwear, coats, and childrens clothes. The remaining items were donated to local charity shops or kept for the next Swish.Thank you to all the volunteers who made the event possible. So why did we do it?The fashion industry has a huge environmental impact, using many natural resources such as farmland, water, and oil (for synthetic Fbres). Plus it uses many tonnes of chemicals in clothes production processes such as dying. In addition it creates harmful greenhouse gas emissions. And new clothes are expensive! By reusing someone elses unworn clothes you can refresh your wardrobe for less of everything!27.9kg of CO2 emissions is saved for every kg of clothes reused, compared to buying new. For us, that meant that the clothes rehomed on the day has saved approximately the amount of CO2 generated by driving 4801 miles or charging 24,000 smartphones. We also received money donations from happy customers who went away with new items, and bought the yummy cake in our caf. This totalled 216 which, together with the money raised by the very successful Repair Cafs, will allow us to put on more events and grow a fund to facilitate local projects that beneFt the environment. We all have clothes languishing at the back of a wardrobe that we are never going to wear again. By getting them out there and available for other people, we can extend their use, save people money, and reduce our overall clothing footprint. We are planning another Swish for October details will be shared nearer the time. We hope to see you there, whether you are donating clothes, grabbing a bargain, or a bit of both.
